- Pirates’ pitchers only had 9 games last season in which they struck out 10 or more batter, the fewest in the bigs. They went 5-4 in those games.
- Over the last two seasons, John Lackey has made a total of zero starts in April and eight starts in May.
- Here’s an unexpected result: the two players who had the most games with four or more hits last season were Miguel Tejada and Denard Span who had six such games each.
- David Wright, Michael Bourn and Evan Longoria all struck out 140 times last season.
- Over the last two seasons, Rich Harden has pitched a total of 289 innings. Tom Seaver pitched 290 in 1973.
- No point in the Arizona’s Chris Snyder even learning the steal sign this spring. In 491 big league games, he’s 0 for 2 in steal attempts.
- Last season before the All-Star break Troy Tulowitzki hit 16 homers with a .254 batting average. After the break he also hit 16 homers but his average was .342.
- Last season, the Angels led the majors with 91 games in which they had 10 or more hits. They had a 68-23 record in those games. The Reds had the fewest with 50, going 37-13.
- Lifetime, Barry Zito is 58-66 with 4.23 ERA before the All-Star break and 75-40 with a 3.42 ERA after. In fact, he’s never had a losing record in the second half with his worse record being 6-6 in 2003.
From the Bill Chuck files: “The heaviest player as officially posted in the bigs last year was the Dodgers’ Jonathan Broxton, tipping the scales at 295. The lightest was the Rockies’ Esmil Rogers, who made one appearance and then his 150-pound frame was caught in a gust of wind.’’ Also, “When Jered Weaver is good, he’s really good: In his 16 wins last season, he had an ERA of 1.84 and a 0.905 WHIP. But in his eight losses, he had a 6.99 ERA and a 1.835 WHIP.’’ Also, “Mark Teixeira has never had a successful sacrifice bunt in his career.’
