AL West, May 1 edition

by Bill Chuck on May 1, 2012

The AL West has one team over .500, it turns out that they are also the best team in baseball.

The Texas Rangers are 17-6 and are 9-1 on the road, 11-5 versus team over .500 and 6-1 against teams below .500. Their 2.81 ERA is the best in the AL, their .291 batting average is the best in baseball. Their starters 3.14 ERA is the best in AL, their bullpen’s 1.98 ERA is the second best in baseball. I have now watched Yu Darvish (4-0, 2.18) against the Yankees and the Jays and I’m very impressed. The Rangers have so many bats that when one goes down, you don’t even notice. Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz are the only Rangers to play in every game this season. Josh Hamilton (.395 with 9 homers and 25 RBI) can take his time and get healthy because the rest of the team has his back.

Oakland and Seattle (each 11-13) cannot hit. The Mariners are hitting .238 and fading and the A’s are at .209 and have scored only 73 runs. Ichiro Suzuki is at .294 and Jesus Montero has hit four homers. Yoenis Cespedes has gone deep five times and Josh Reddick has four dingers and hitting .277.

The Angels (8-15) are one of the big disappointments of the season. They are 4-6 in their last 10 and that’s about as good as it gets. They have scored only 80 runs with their .236 avg. I would not like to be Albert Pujols most days this season (I would like to be him on payday). He’s hitting .217 with no homers and just four ribbies.
