A hit a game

by Bill Chuck on July 13, 2012

Since 1961, there have been 81 players who have gotten 162 hits in a season, an average of one a game. The highest batting average for a 162 hit season belongs to Henry Aaron, who hit .327 in 139 games for the Braves in 1971. The lowest average belongs to Larry Bowa who had 162 hits in 159 games for the Phils in 1971.

There are three players who had 162 hits in 162 games in a season: Jeff Bagwell, who hit .286; Will Clark, who hit .282; and Terry Pendleton, who hit .264.

The path to 162 hits in a season, begins with getting a hit in each game. While none of us expect a player to have a 162-game hitting streak, we would like to see batters average at least a hit a game.

Here are the batters who have had the most games this season in which they had one hit:

Strange to see “Tony Gwynn” on any type of hitless list…

Also FYI you’ve got a few pitchers on that hitless games list. Shawn Camp hasn’t even made a plate appearance this year…
