Nine to Know: The winning number is 303 (at least for now)

by Bill Chuck on November 7, 2012

Until Florida decides on who they voted for, President Barack Obama has been re-elected with 303 electoral votes.

That number enables us to have another fun (and meaningless) Nine to Know:

  1. Randy Johnson finished his pitching career with 303 wins.
  2. Walter Johnson in 1912 and J.R. Richard in 1978 had a 303 strikeout season.
  3. Doug Jones had 303 career saves.
  4. Vicente Romo, Dan Osinski, and Woody Fryman each appeared in 303 games in relief.
  5. Edward Mujica, Mike Gonzalez, Randy Choate, and Burke Badenhop each had a 3.03 ERA in 2012.
  6. Pablo Sandoval, Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez, Pete Rose, Al Oliver, Harvey Kuenn, Moises Alou, Will Clark, Mike Greenwell, and Chipper Jones, to name a few, all have career .303 batting averages.
  7. Pinky Whitney, Bob Boone, and Geoff Jenkins all had 303 career doubles.
  8. John Mayberry, Bob Tewksbury, and Torey Lovullo are three of the 12 players who appeared in 303 games.
  9. When you want to call the front office of the Colorado Rockies, start with area code (303).
