Eli Whiteside, the 33-year old catcher, has had a fascinating offseason.
He first celebrated his second World Series championship with the Giants only to find that the Yankees claimed him off waivers on Nov. 5.
About a month later, the Blue Jays claimed him after New York had designated him for assignment to make room for Andy Pettitte on the 40-man roster.
Not long after that, on December 12, the Rangers claimed Whiteside off waivers.
But perhaps you heard that Texas signed A.J. Pierzynski to a one-year contract and yesterday, when reliever Jason Frasor signed a one-year deal with the Texas, the Rangers designated Whiteside for assignment to make room on their 40-man roster.
In Whiteside’s MLB career he has worn uniforms #15 and #77 with Orioles and #22 with the Giants. Wherever he ends up next, I suggest he wear #41, because he clearly is always the 41st man on the 40-man roster.
