Going Dutch: Van Mil hopes to rebound with the Reds

by Bill Chuck on January 3, 2013

Loek Van Mil, 7-foot-1 RHP from the Netherlands, has signed with the Reds.

In 2012, the 28-year-old  had a 6.48 ERA in six appearances for the Indians’ Triple-A affiliate in Columbus and a 6.30 ERA in eight appearances for the Angels’ Triple-A. He also made 27 appearances for the Indians’ Double-A affiliate, the Akron Aeros, where he posted a 1.94 ERA and 0.971 WHIP in 46.1  innings.

Ludovicus Jacobus Maria Van Mil was born in Oss, NL and if he makes the squad he would replace Didi Gregorius (.300/.300/.300) as the Reds’ Dutchman. Gregorius, born in Amsterdam, was traded to Arizona in the three-team Shin-Soo Choo deal.

Rick van den Hurk, born in Eindhoven, Netherlands, made four relief appearances for the Pirates in 2012 going 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA.

The only person born in the Netherlands in the Hall of Fame is pitcher Bert Blyleven who was born in Zeist.

Honus Wagner, the Flyin’ Dutchman, was born in Chartiers, PA.
