Blown save of the night: Blame it on “an idiot”

by Bill Chuck on June 26, 2013

There was only one blown save in baseball last night and that honor goes to Addison Reed of the White Sox, but perhaps it really should go on the record of Gordon Beckham.

With two down in the top of the 9th with Chicago leading 4-3 and David Wright on second after a single and a steal, pinch hitter Daniel Murphy hit a popup in front of the mound. Third baseman Conor Gillaspie called for the ball but second baseman Beckham tried to make the catch and the ball fell for an error by Beckham and Wright scored.

Alexei Ramirez hit a walkoff single in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th to give the White Sox a 5-4 win and gave Reed a vulture victory.

“Stupid play for me,” Beckham said. “My heart was in the right spot, but my mind obviously wasn’t. It was loud. I screwed up. It is what it is. I’m glad we won. It didn’t cost us the game, but it’s a stupid play and I’m an idiot.”
