Walkoff of the night

by Bill Chuck on June 26, 2013

Ichiro Suzuki now has two career walkoff homers and the one he hit last night evens the score with Mariano Rivera.

The first walkoff homer of Ichiro’s career occurred on September 18, 2009 when with two outs in the bottom of the 9th and the Yankees leading 2-1, with a runner on second, Ichiro put the first pitch he saw from Mariano into the right field stands for a 3-2 victory for the M’s and a loss for Rivera.

The second walkoff of his career came last night against the Rangers when with two outs in the bottom of the 9th and the Yankees and Rangers tied, 3-3, with the bases empty, Ichiro put a 1-2 pitch from Tanner Scheppers into the right field stands for a 4-3 victory for the Yankees and a win for Rivera.

Our friends at Elias share:

The last time a player hit a walkoff homer off a pitcher to give him the loss in the game and also hit a walk off home run to give that same pitcher a win when they were teammates was (in either order): May 8, 2004 Andruw Jones, ATL vs. HOU – giving teammate Antonio Alfonseca the win; April 30, 2007 Andruw Jones, ATL vs. PHI – off Antonio Alfonseca to give him the loss.
