Chris Davis vs Roger Maris

by Bill Chuck on July 1, 2013

For the first time since July 31, 2005, the Orioles hosted “Sunday Night Baseball,” and fans got the chance to see Chris Davis‘ race to make history.

The Orioles defeated the quickly fading fourth place New York Yankees, 4-2, behind three solo home runs against Hiroki Kuroda, including Davis’ 31st of the season.

The Orioles completed a three-game home sweep of the Yankees for the first time since April 15-17, 2005 as closer Jim Johnson earned his 100th career save.

When Roger Maris set the single-season HR record in 1961, he hit his 31st homer in the second game of a July 4 doubleheader (a former tradition) against the Detroit Tigers. Despite the loss to Yankee killer Frank Lary, the Yankees were 48-28 after 76 games.
