Erik Bedard joins a rare group

by Bill Chuck on July 21, 2013

Yes, pitching a winning no-hitter is magnificent and rare.

But they are commonplace compared to pitching at least five innings of no-hit ball and losing the game.

Last night, Astros pitcher Erik Bedard, who usually quits in September, took himself out of his game last night against the Seattle Mariners after 6.1 innings with a unique pitching line:

“I asked him, ‘Are you sure?’ And he said, ‘I’m done,’ ” Houston manager Bo Porter told reporters after the 4-2 loss to Seattle.

“I’ve had three shoulder surgeries,” Bedard explained to reporters. “I’m not going over 110 [pitches]. I’d rather pitch a couple more years than face another batter.”

The Mariners picked up their lone hit of the game, a two-run double to Michael Saunders, off Jose Cisneros who walked a batter and allowed a runner inherited from a Bedard walk, to score.
