I feel like Cal Ripken

by Bill Chuck on July 16, 2013

mays-marichal-callisonIn 1964, my dad took me to the only other All-Star Game hosted by the New York Mets. It was played at the brand new Shea Stadium.

Tonight, thanks to my muse, I will attend the second All-Star Game hosted by the New York Mets. It will be played at the relatively new Citi Field. In the wonderful circle of  baseball life, I will stay with my daughter and her husband

As a result, I will have a NY Mets hosted All-Star Game streak spanning 39 years; I feel like Cal Ripken only with Billy Ripken‘s hairstyle.

The 1964 game was decided by a Johnny Callison three-run walkoff homer off Boston’s Dick Radatz. The Monster was in his third inning of relief. The winning pitcher was Juan Marichal.

The game took 2:37, about the time it will take to complete the opening ceremonies tonight.

There were 18 future Hall of Famers on the teams, 12 from the NL, six from the AL.

The NL manager was the Dodgers’ Walter Alston; Al Lopez of the Chicago White Sox managed the AL team.

Here’s the 1964 box score
