Watch out for overused pitchers

by Bill Chuck on July 18, 2013

We are far from the 81-game mark, the end of the first half of the season, but there are a number of pitchers who have appeared in at least 40-games already with Arizona’s Brad Ziegler having taken the mound in 50 games already.

Ziegler, who appeared in a career-high 77 games last season, is not alone in excessive appearances before the 100th game of the year. The Mets’ Scott Rice and the Rays’ Joel Peralta have each appeared in 49 games, while the Brewers’ Mike Gonzalez has been in 47 games.

In all 66 pitchers have appeared in at least 40 games, with another 23 pitchers including Mariano Rivera, Jonathan Papelbon, Sergio Romo, Jose Veras, Ernesto Frieri, and Scott Downs having been in 39 or 38 games.
