The Ichiro Suzuki Report

by Bill Chuck on August 22, 2013

I must admit I felt funny writing “Ichiro Suzuki” in the title of this report, because really “Ichiro” is all that was necessary.

It’s not there are no other Ichiros in the game, but since his arrival in the US in 2001, Ichiro is one of the few true mononymous athletes.

Yesterday, would have been Wilt’s 77th birthday. Do I need to tell you we are talking about Wilt Chamberlain?

Is there any question who I’m talking about when I write, “Ichiro now has 2722 hits in the US. The Babe had 2873.” Of course, Ichiro has had 8509 at bats and Babe Ruth had just 8399.

Ichiro has been a marvel at the plate, on the bases, and in the field. He has done it all and could do it all. Although I doubt he could shoot baskets like Lebron, Shaq, Kobe, or Michael, score goals like Pele or Ronaldo, serve like Serena, or play golf like Arnie, Jack, or Tiger. But he has been as memorable as Willie, Mickey, and the Duke.

Ichiro now has 4000 professional hits with 1278 of them coming during his days in Japan.

Nine to Know

Since 2001, when Ichiro joined the Seattle Mariners, he has 2722 hits, the most in baseball.
