The Only Blown Save Report

by Bill Chuck on August 30, 2013

Yesterday afternoon, the Oakland A’s held a 6-1 lead over the Tigers through five innings.

They had beaten up the 19-1 Max Scherzer, who was looking at loss number two instead of win #20.

They held a 6-3 through eight innings and Miguel Cabrera was already out of the game with pain in strained groin.

They had won the first three games of this four-game set and they were looking to get out of Dodge (or Ford or Chevy) with a sweet sweep and a boost in mo-mentum.

Did not happen.

The Tigers scored four times in the 9th against Grant Balfour (0-3), who had baseball’s only blown save yesterday.

Victor Martinez had an RBI single, then Torii Hunter hit a huge three-run walkoff homer. Tori-eye now has 16 homers this season and four walkoff dingers in his career.

Balfour has been terrific out of the pen the last two seasons for Oakland other than the taxing effect of too many IRS.
