The Lots of Hits Shutout Report

by Bill Chuck on September 2, 2013

Mike Aviles hit a 9th inning grand slam to give the Cleveland Indians a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

That was just one of the things interesting about this game including:

  • Miguel Cabrera sitting out his second straight game because of a strained abdomen.
  • A loss would have given the Indians an 0-6 road trip.
  • Justin Verlander showed signs of being Verlander the Great once again by holding a team scoreless for the first time since a seven-inning start on July 14 against Texas.
  • The Tigers played without center fielder Austin Jackson, a day after he hurt his right shoulder met the center field wall.
  • It was Mike Aviles’ 48th career homer and his first major league grand slam.

But two items stood out for me:

The Indians used five pitchers in this combined shutout
