The Walkoff No-Hitter Report

by Bill Chuck on September 30, 2013

Okay, so there we were watching a no-hitter hoping for a walkoff hit, but thrilled there was a walkoff wild pitch.

How bizarre is that?

Almost as bizarre as not seeing Henderson Alvarez jumping into his catcher’s arms on the mound at the end of his no-hitter, but leaping into the arms of Giancarlo Stanton from the on-deck circle, as Stanton scored the winning run.

This was all part of the Marlins defeating the Tigers, 1-0, when with two down in the bottom of the 9th inning, Luke Putkonen‘s first pitch to pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs was wild, sailing past catcher Brayan Pena and enabling the winning run to score and the no-hitter to become official.

This was the first no-hitter to end on a wild pitch.

It was the first walk-off complete-game no-hitter since Virgil Trucks of the Tigers threw one on May 15, 1952 against Washington,

It was also the first walkoff no-hitter since Francisco Cordova and Ricardo Rincon combined for the Pittsburgh Pirates to no-hit the Astros on July 12, 1997. That game ended with Mark Smith hitting a walkoff 10th inning three-run homer.

It was the fourth no-hitter on the last day of the season:

  • Mike Witt of the Angels threw a perfect game at Texas on September 30, 1984.
  • Vida Blue and three Oakland relievers combined to no-hit the Angels September 28, 1975/
  • On October 15, 1892, Bumpus Jones of Cincinnati did it against Pittsburgh.
