In St. Louis, Big Papi Will Play First Base

by Bill Chuck on October 21, 2013

Games 3, 4, and if necessary, 5 of the World Series will be played in St. Louis without the Designated Hitter.

That means that Red Sox will have either David Ortiz or Mike Napoli in the line-up, but not both.

Napoli, in his first full season as a first baseman seemed to improve defensively as the season progressed.

Napoli at first

Rtot is a fielding metric. It is an expression of the runs saved by a player in the field. The number 0 represents a defense neutral player who isn’t particularly good or bad. Plus or minus 5 trends towards the slightly above or below average. +/- 5-10 represents a pretty good or bad player, and +/- 10 or more represents an outstanding or awful player.

Ortiz at the plate, when he plays first

For the most part, Ortiz can either hit or play the field, but not both.

Ortiz playing first? I’d rather take the field with 8 defenders.

Even I’m not that cynical.
