WAR Pitching Leaders since 2010 and by Decade since 1950

by Bill Chuck on February 10, 2016

Roger-Clemens-TestifiesRoger Clemens has the highest WAR of any pitcher since 1950 at 139.4.
He swears it’s true.

This was fun simply because decades are meaningless arbitrary dates, but it is often how we lazily measure information.

A few things stood out as I put this together:

  • Somebody smart is going to sign Cliff Lee to low salary/heavily incentive contract for 2016.
  • Roger Clemens was the only pitcher to be on the leaderboard for two different decades. Take that for what it’s worth.
  • The combined WAR for the top three pitchers in 1990-99 was 186.7; for the top three in 1970-79 it was 191.6. I’ll take those Seventies pitchers in a heartbeat.
  • Then again, I think the Sixties threesome is the best on the board.
  • Am I the only one who remembers Billy Pierce? Who knew he was that good? Or maybe WAR isn’t that good.

Have fun with this.
