The June Swoon of the Red Sox

by Bill Chuck on June 22, 2016

Through May, the Red Sox had the best record in the American League at 32-20 (.615). Their record was only exceeded in all of baseball by the Cubs who had gone 35-15 (.700).

Heading into June, the members of Red Sox Nation were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of facing Theo in the Series danced in their heads. But as the page of the calendar turned the fate of the team did as well. The dreaded June Swoon had hit.

  • In April, the Sox went 14-10 and outscored the opposition 126-105 +21.
  • In May, the Sox went 18-10 and outscored the opposition 182-123 +59.
  • Thus far in June, the Sox are 7-11 (already more losses than any month) and have been outscored by the opposition 84-85 -1.

Red Sox offense by month

  • You can see that while the Sox homers in June already have equaled their output in April, their dropoff from May has been precipitous.
  • Their batting average is down, their OBP is down, their slugging is down and as a result their OPS is down.
  • They’ve even been caught stealing in June as many times as they were in April and May combined.
